Project planning
What to know before starting a solar project
A solar project does not need to start with every answer. But a few basic details can make the first conversation much more useful.
1. Know the property type
Residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, and developer-led projects each have different design and approval paths. The property type helps determine the right questions to ask first.
2. Gather utility information
A recent electric bill is one of the most helpful starting points. It can show usage, charges, meter information, utility provider, and rate structure. For commercial projects, demand charges and time-of-use pricing may be especially important.
3. Think about goals
Some property owners want the fastest payback. Others care about backup power, sustainability, tenant appeal, long-term cost control, or preparing a site for future energy needs. Clear goals help shape the system design.
4. Consider the site
Roof age, roof material, shading, available land, electrical equipment, and site access can all affect solar feasibility. You do not need a perfect site review before reaching out, but photos, plans, or property notes can help.
5. Ask about design, permitting, and engineering early
Solar is not just panels. Projects often need drawings, permits, utility paperwork, equipment coordination, and sometimes engineering review. Planning for those steps early helps avoid delays later.
