The duck curve: why batteries matter for solar

Solar produces a lot of energy during the day. But many homes, businesses, and electric grids need the most help later, when the sun is going down and demand rises.

What is the duck curve?

The “duck curve” is a way to describe the shape of electricity demand on grids with a lot of solar power. During sunny midday hours, solar production can reduce the need for grid power. Later in the afternoon and evening, solar production drops while demand often rises.

On a graph, that midday dip and evening ramp can look a bit like a duck. The practical takeaway is simple: solar is extremely useful, but timing matters.

Why timing affects value

If a property produces more solar energy than it can use during the middle of the day, that excess energy may be exported to the grid depending on utility rules. In some markets, exported energy is worth less than energy used directly on site.

At the same time, many utility rates are higher during peak hours, which can occur later in the day. That creates a mismatch: solar production is strongest in lower-demand hours, while expensive electricity may happen when solar output is falling.

How batteries help

Battery storage can shift energy from one time of day to another. A battery can charge when solar production is high or when utility energy is cheaper, then discharge when electricity is more expensive or when the site needs backup support.

For homeowners, batteries can improve self-consumption and provide resilience during outages. For commercial properties, batteries may help manage peak demand, time-of-use pricing, and energy strategy. The best value depends on the utility tariff, site load profile, battery size, and project goals.

Solar plus storage is a planning conversation

Not every solar project needs batteries on day one. But battery readiness is worth discussing early. Design choices, electrical equipment, interconnection, and space planning can affect whether storage is easy to add later.

Apollo PV Designs can help review solar and storage goals so the project moves forward with fewer surprises.
